Infused Muscle Cream Recipe: How to Make CBD + CBG Topical Cream at Home

By Mellow Moose

Quick Answer

DIY infused muscle cream uses CBD and CBG isolate (with optional THC) blended into a topical cream base for fast-absorbing, non-greasy application after exercise or activity. Using 12g each of CBD and CBG isolate per 32oz of cream base, the finished batch contains 24,000mg total cannabinoids — 3,000mg per 4oz (1,500mg CBD + 1,500mg CBG). This matches the potency of our MEND topical cream. Adding THC extract produces an extra-strength version comparable to REPAIR.

Why Make Your Own Infused Muscle Cream?

Most commercial CBD topicals on the market are loaded with cheap fillers, synthetic fragrances, and unnecessary preservatives — and most contain a small fraction of the cannabinoid content the label suggests. Independent testing has repeatedly shown that retail CBD topicals are routinely under-dosed, sometimes by 80% or more.

Making your own with isolate-grade cannabinoids sidesteps both problems. You know exactly how much CBD, CBG, or THC is in your finished product (down to the milligram), you control the base ingredients, and you can dial in cannabinoid ratios that match what you actually want to use.

The other reason: cost. A commercial high-potency CBG-CBD muscle cream at this concentration would retail for $120–250 per jar. This recipe produces two 16oz jars at meaningfully lower cost using our premium isolates.

A Note on Transparency: This Recipe IS Our MEND Topical

Here's something most brands won't tell you: our finished MEND topical cream and REPAIR topical cream are made using this same base — Nourish Us Naturals' Simple MSM Muscle Cream — combined with our CBD and CBG isolates at the same 3,000mg-per-4oz potency.

No hidden ingredients, no proprietary blend, no upcharge for marketing. The base is a high-quality vendor product. The isolate is ours, made in-house through our patented water-only solventless extraction. Mixed together at the right ratio, you get a high-potency topical that performs as well as anything on the market — including our own retail product.

If you want to skip the DIY work, MEND and REPAIR are available pre-made in our store. If you'd rather build it yourself and save on cost, this recipe shows you exactly how.

Recipe Overview

  • Yield: 32 oz (two 16 oz jars)
  • Active time: 15 minutes
  • Mix time: 30 minutes
  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Potency: 3,000mg total cannabinoids per 4oz (matches MEND topical strength)

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cup
  • Hand mixer or whisk
  • Small silicone spatula (for scraping isolate out of the jar)
  • Mason jar + small saucepan (for double-boiler melting)
  • Topical jars or pump bottles (2 × 16 oz)

Ingredients

Standard version (MEND-equivalent potency):

Optional extra-strength addition (REPAIR-direction):

  • 9.2g THC extract (at ~85% potency — yields ~1,000mg THC per 4oz)

Note on the base: Nourish Us Naturals offers their MSM cream in different sizes and styles. The Simple MSM Muscle Cream is what we use, but their other muscle cream variants work too. Pick based on personal preference for texture and feel — the cannabinoid content of your finished product will be the same regardless of which base you choose.

Instructions

  1. Prep the base. Measure 32 oz of MSM cream and pour into a clean mixing bowl.
  2. Melt the isolate. Place CBD isolate, CBG isolate, and THC extract (if using) into a mason jar. Set the jar in a small saucepan filled with 1–2 inches of water (double-boiler setup) and warm over low heat. Stir occasionally as the isolate melts into a clear liquid — typically 3–5 minutes. Don't let the water boil vigorously. Use a small silicone spatula to scrape all material out of the jar once melted.
  3. Combine and mix. Pour the melted cannabinoids into the cream base immediately. Use a hand mixer or whisk to blend thoroughly until fully incorporated and smooth. The cream should look uniform with no visible streaks or graininess. This typically takes 3–5 minutes of active mixing.
  4. Transfer and store. Transfer finished cream into airtight jars or pump bottles for storage.

Why This Recipe Works (And Why Most DIY Topical Recipes Don't)

Most DIY CBD topical recipes online tell you to start with CBD oil tincture or infused coconut oil, then mix it into a cream base. Both approaches have problems:

  • Tincture-based topicals dilute too much. A 30mL bottle of 1000mg CBD tincture contains only 1g of CBD. Adding it to a 32oz cream base produces a topical at ~30mg/oz — too weak for most users to notice meaningful effect.
  • Infused-oil-based recipes are inconsistent. Cannabinoid content varies based on infusion temperature, time, and starting material quality. The dose per ounce can vary by 30–50% between batches.

Using pure isolate sidesteps both issues. You're adding a known weight of pure cannabinoid directly to your base — no carrier dilution, no infusion variability. The result is a precisely dosed topical at commercial high-potency strength.

The MSM-based approach also matters. MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is itself an active ingredient associated with general muscle and joint comfort. Combining MSM with high-potency cannabinoids stacks two complementary topical ingredients in one product — which is the same approach our retail MEND and REPAIR topicals take.

The double-boiler melt step is what most online recipes skip. Pre-melting the isolate into liquid form before combining with the cream base ensures full incorporation. Trying to mix solid isolate powder directly into cream produces grainy, inconsistent results — even with aggressive mixing.

Dosage & Application

Per 32oz batch (standard version):

  • 12,000mg CBD
  • 12,000mg CBG
  • 24,000mg total cannabinoids

Per 8oz jar (standard version):

  • 3,000mg CBD
  • 3,000mg CBG
  • 6,000mg total per jar

Per 4oz portion (standard version):

  • 1,500mg CBD
  • 1,500mg CBG
  • 3,000mg total per 4oz (matches MEND topical potency)

Per 32oz batch (extra-strength version with THC):

  • 12,000mg CBD
  • 12,000mg CBG
  • ~7,800mg THC
  • ~31,800mg total cannabinoids

Per 4oz portion (extra-strength version):

  • 1,500mg CBD + 1,500mg CBG + ~975mg THC
  • ~3,975mg total per 4oz (extra-strength territory)

For application: A pea-sized amount delivers approximately 50–70mg total cannabinoids depending on version. Apply to the desired area and massage gently. External use only. Always perform a patch test before broader use.

This is a high-potency formulation. A small amount goes a long way — start conservative and adjust based on personal response.

Common Failure Modes

  • Grainy or chunky cream. The isolate didn't fully dissolve. Most likely cause: skipped or incomplete double-boiler melt step. Solution: pre-melt all cannabinoids into a clear liquid in the mason jar before adding to the cream base. If you're already past that point, transfer the mixture back to a double boiler, warm gently, and re-mix.
  • Cannabinoid settling at the bottom. This shouldn't happen with proper melting and mixing. If it does, the isolate likely solidified before fully dispersing. Re-melt the entire batch in a double boiler and re-mix vigorously.
  • Cream becomes slightly cloudy or changes appearance after a few days. Normal. The cannabinoids are fully incorporated and the appearance change is just optical, not a sign of degradation. Potency is unaffected.
  • Tingling or skin irritation on first use. Some people are sensitive to MSM or the cream base ingredients — not the cannabinoids themselves. Patch test before broader application.
  • Material left stuck in the mason jar. Use a small silicone spatula to fully scrape the melted isolate out. At 12g of premium isolate per cannabinoid, even small residual amounts represent meaningful potency loss.

How to Customize

  • CBD-only version: Replace the 12g CBG with an additional 12g CBD for a 24g CBD / 32oz batch (~3,000mg CBD per 4oz).
  • CBG-only version: Reverse the above — 24g CBG total. Useful for those who prefer CBG specifically for daytime topical application.
  • Lighter potency: Halve the cannabinoids — 6g CBD + 6g CBG produces a 1,500mg-per-4oz topical, comparable to most premium retail CBD topicals.
  • Higher potency: Multiply by 1.5x — 18g CBD + 18g CBG produces a 4,500mg-per-4oz topical for users who need maximum strength.
  • With essential oils: Add 5–10 drops of menthol, peppermint, or eucalyptus essential oil per 16oz jar after mixing for cooling sensation. Add carefully — too much can cause skin irritation.

FAQs

What does cannabis-infused muscle cream actually do? Topical cannabinoids interact with cannabinoid receptors in the skin and underlying tissue. The MSM in the base is its own ingredient associated with general muscle and joint comfort. People commonly use this kind of topical as part of a post-exercise routine. Effects are localized to the area of application and do not produce intoxication, even when THC is included.

How is this different from CBD salve or balm? Salves and balms are typically oil- or beeswax-based, which makes them thicker, longer-lasting on the skin, and slower to absorb. The MSM-based cream used here absorbs faster than a balm and stacks the MSM ingredient with cannabinoids in one product. Both formats deliver cannabinoids effectively — it's a matter of preference.

Does adding THC enhance the topical effect? Adding THC contributes to the entourage effect — multiple cannabinoids working together rather than one in isolation. THC applied topically does not produce intoxication because it doesn't reach the bloodstream in significant amounts. However, individual responses to topical cannabinoids vary.

How does this compare to your MEND and REPAIR topicals? The standard version of this recipe is identical to our MEND topical cream — same base, same 1:1 CBD/CBG isolate, same 3,000mg-per-4oz potency. The extra-strength version with added THC moves toward the direction of our REPAIR topical cream, though REPAIR uses distillate rather than pure THC extract. If you'd rather skip the DIY work, both finished products are available on our store.

How often can I apply it? As needed, typically 2–3 times per day on the areas you're focused on. Adjust based on personal response.

How should I store the finished cream? Keep in a cool, dry place in sealed containers. Refrigeration extends shelf life. Properly stored, the cream maintains potency for 6+ months.

Can I use this if I'm drug tested? Topical cannabinoids generally do not enter the bloodstream in measurable amounts and are unlikely to cause a positive drug test. However, we cannot guarantee any specific drug test result. If you're subject to testing, the CBD-only or CBG-only versions (without THC) are the safer choice.

Are there any risks? Some people may experience skin irritation from MSM, the cream base, or essential oils added. Always patch test before widespread use. Discontinue if irritation occurs. External use only. People with sulfa allergies should use caution due to the MSM content.

Why isolate instead of full-spectrum extract? Isolate gives you precise dosing control. Full-spectrum extracts contain other cannabinoids and terpenes that vary batch to batch, which makes consistent formulation harder. Isolate is also colorless and odorless, so it doesn't tint or scent your finished cream.
