Most commercial CBN isn't really "made" from hemp directly — it's chemically converted from another cannabinoid using acid catalysts.

The typical process: a producer starts with bulk CBD (or sometimes CBC), then introduces a strong acid catalyst — often p-toluenesulfonic acid, sulfuric acid, or iodine — to force a molecular conversion into CBN. The reaction is fast, cheap, and easy to scale, which is why it dominates the market.

But that approach has real problems.

The hidden chemistry of converted CBN

When CBD is forcibly converted into CBN using harsh catalysts, several things happen that producers rarely talk about:

• Reaction byproducts. Acid-catalyzed conversion doesn't just produce CBN — it can also produce isomers and unintended cannabinoid analogs that may not be present in naturally aged hemp.
• Residual catalysts. Trace amounts of acids or other reagents can remain in the final product unless aggressive purification steps are taken.
• Inconsistent profiles. Because the reaction is sensitive to temperature, time, and concentration, batch-to-batch consistency varies more than buyers realize.
• A different molecule than nature makes. While the resulting CBN is chemically CBN, the path it took to get there introduces variables that aged-hemp CBN doesn't have.
• No clinical research. Almost none of the CBN flooding the market — converted in beakers with acid — has been clinically studied.

For most of the market, this is invisible — the COA shows CBN, the buyer sees CBN, and the conversion history isn't disclosed. But for formulators and consumers who care about clean-label, traceable, naturally-derived ingredients, the difference matters.

Naturally derived, not chemically converted

Our CBN Isolate is TruCBN™ — manufactured by FloraWorks through the natural degradation of cannabinoids over time, the same process that occurs slowly in aged hemp, controlled and isolated to high purity.

This means:

• 2024 Pharmaceuticals trial — randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with TruCBN at 25/50/100mg nightly compared against 4mg melatonin and placebo over 4 weeks. All TruCBN doses significantly improved PROMIS Sleep Disturbance scores vs placebo, comparable to melatonin.
• 2023 Bonn-Miller study — 20mg CBN reduced nighttime awakenings and improved sleep disturbance vs placebo over 7 nights.

This level of research is genuinely rare in the cannabinoid category. Most CBN products are sold based on traditional usage and anecdotal reports, not controlled clinical data. For brands and formulators building products with research-backed positioning, this matters.

Working with isolate

CBN Isolate dissolves easily in fats and oils but does not dissolve in water. To incorporate it into a formulation:

• For oils and fats: gently warm the carrier (coconut oil, butter, MCT) to 140–180°F and stir in the isolate until fully dissolved.
• For beverages: mix into a fat-containing component first (cream, milk, oil-based syrup) before adding to the drink.
• For topicals: combine with the oil phase of your formulation during the warming stage.

For reference: 1 gram of ≥97% CBN Isolate contains approximately 970mg of CBN.

Storage and shelf life

Store in a cool, dark, dry place in a sealed container. Unlike finished products that degrade as carrier oils oxidize, pure CBN Isolate is exceptionally shelf-stable — properly stored, it maintains its potency for years. Slight reductions in CBN content (typically a few percentage points) may occur over very long storage periods, but the material itself remains stable and effective.

CBN Isolate is one of the easiest cannabinoid ingredients to work with at home. Because it's flavor-neutral and highly concentrated, you can build custom tinctures, topicals, and infused recipes with full control over potency and ingredients.

Quick start: Custom CBN tincture

A simple 30mL tincture at approximately 1000mg total CBN:

Ingredients:

• 1 gram CBN Isolate (≥97% purity)
• 30 mL (1 oz) carrier oil — MCT, hemp seed, or olive

Method:

1. Gently warm carrier oil to 140–180°F (do not boil).
2. Slowly stir in CBN Isolate until fully dissolved (1–2 minutes).
3. Remove from heat, transfer to a dropper bottle, and store in a cool, dark place.

This makes roughly 30 servings at ~33mg per 1mL.

Pairing CBN with other cannabinoids

CBN is commonly blended with other cannabinoid isolates to create custom multi-cannabinoid formulations. A few common pairings:

• CBN + CBD — frequently used in nighttime tincture blends
• CBN + CBG — for functional, multi-cannabinoid formulations
• CBN + CBD + CBG — full multi-cannabinoid profile in precise ratios

To build a blended tincture, simply combine the desired weights of each isolate (e.g., 0.5g CBN +1g CBD = 1.5g total) and follow the same warming/dissolving method above.

What is TruCBN, and why does this product use it?

TruCBN™ is the brand name of a high-purity CBN ingredient manufactured by FloraWorks in Oregon under NSF, GMP, ISO 9001, and Kosher certifications. It's the only CBN ingredient currently backed by published peer-reviewed clinical research — including a 2024 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Pharmaceuticals and a 2023 double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Bonn-Miller et al.).

We chose TruCBN as our CBN isolate because it's naturally derived rather than chemically converted, manufactured under certified standards, and backed by the strongest body of clinical research in the CBN category.

Does this contain THC?

No detectable THC. Our CBN Isolate is produced and tested to non-detect (<LOQ) levels of Delta-9 THC across every batch. Trace cannabinoids may be present at levels below laboratory quantification limits. We cannot guarantee a negative drug test.

What is CBN, and how is it different from CBD or CBG?

CBN (cannabinol) is a minor cannabinoid that forms naturally as cannabis ages and oxidizes. Unlike CBD or CBG — which are produced directly by the plant — CBN is what those compounds gradually become over time when exposed to oxygen, light, and heat. CBN is most commonly associated with evening and nighttime routines.

How is your CBN different from typical market CBN?

Most commercial CBN is produced through acid-catalyzed conversion — typically using sulfuric acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, or iodine to chemically convert CBD or other cannabinoids into CBN quickly. This process can leave behind residual catalyst contamination and produces uncharacterized byproducts and isomers.

Our CBN — TruCBN — is produced through the natural oxidation of cannabinoid precursors (the same chemistry that occurs in aged hemp over time, controlled and consistent), and is the only CBN ingredient with published clinical research behind it. We do not use acid catalysts or chemical conversion shortcuts.

What does the clinical research on TruCBN show?

The most directly relevant trial is the 2024 Pharmaceuticals study — a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Adults with self-reported sleep disturbance were randomized to TruCBN at 25mg, 50mg, or 100mg nightly, 4mg melatonin, or placebo for four weeks. All three TruCBN doses and the melatonin arm significantly improved PROMIS Sleep Disturbance scores compared to placebo. There was no statistically significant difference in the size of improvement between TruCBN and melatonin.

A separate 2023 study by Bonn-Miller et al. found 20mg CBN (with or without CBD) reduced nighttime awakenings vs placebo over 7 nights.

These trials suggest CBN may be more effective for sleep maintenance (staying asleep, fewer awakenings) than for sleep onset (falling asleep faster).

Is this the same as distillate?

No. Distillate contains a mix of cannabinoids, terpenes, and residual plant compounds. Our CBN Isolate is ≥97% pure cannabinol — a single-cannabinoid crystalline powder.

Can this be combined with other cannabinoids?

Yes. CBN pairs especially well with CBD Isolate for nighttime blends, and can also be combined with CBD + CBG for multi-cannabinoid formulations. Note: combining CBN directly with CBG alone is generally not recommended, as the two cannabinoids work in opposite directions (CBG for daytime alertness, CBN for nighttime use). Is this intended for DIY and formulation use?

Yes. CBN Isolate is used as an ingredient for custom tinctures, capsules, topicals, and edibles. It dissolves cleanly in MCT oil, hemp seed oil, and food-grade alcohol. Its clinical research backing also makes it well-suited for formulators developing research-supported sleep or nighttime products.

Is this CBN Isolate USDA Certified Organic?

No. While most Mellow Moose products are USDA Certified Organic, CBN isolate is not currently approved as an input for USDA organic processing, regardless of how naturally it's derived. We've chosen to source the highest-quality CBN available — TruCBN, naturally derived and clinically studied — even where USDA Organic certification isn't currently possible for this category.

How should I store CBN Isolate?

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark, dry place. Light, heat, and humidity slowly degrade cannabinoids over time. Properly stored, pure CBN Isolate is exceptionally shelf-stable and retains potency for years.
