Research suggests CBN may be more effective for sleep maintenance and continuity (reducing nighttime awakenings) than for falling asleep faster — distinguishing it from melatonin and other onset-focused sleep aids.

Cannabinoid Disclosure

All products are derived from federally compliant hemp and contain no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. Cannabinoid levels may vary slightly from batch to batch. Independent third-party laboratory testing is conducted for each batch, and results are available via the Certificate of Analysis (COA). Even when laboratory testing indicates non-detectable levels of Delta-9 THC, trace cannabinoids may still be present. We cannot guarantee that use of this product will not result in a positive drug test.

Most nighttime cannabinoid products rely on full-spectrum extracts or multi-cannabinoid blends, where cannabinoid ratios can vary and effects may feel inconsistent from batch to batch. Many also use CBN that's been chemically converted from CBD using harsh acid catalysts — a fast, cheap, scalable process that dominates the broader CBN market but introduces reaction byproducts and uncharacterized impurities, with no clinical research behind the resulting ingredient.

Unlike full-spectrum and broad-spectrum tinctures — which are formulated with fixed cannabinoid ratios — isolate-based tinctures offer greater flexibility and control. With premade blends, the cannabinoid profile is set. With isolates, it can be adjusted.

A combination we don't recommend

SLEEP + FOCUS (CBN + CBG) is one combination we generally advise against. CBG supports daytime alertness; CBN is associated with rest and wind-down. Combining them tends to cancel out the benefits of both rather than complement each other — most users get better results choosing one based on time of day rather than blending them.

This flexibility makes it easier to adjust cannabinoid profiles based on personal preference and tolerance.

CBN is most commonly associated with evening and nighttime routines.

What is TruCBN, and why does it matter?

TruCBN™ is a high-purity CBN ingredient manufactured by FloraWorks in Oregon under NSF, GMP, ISO 9001, and Kosher certifications. It's the only CBN ingredient currently backed by published peer-reviewed clinical research — including a 2024 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Pharmaceuticals and a 2023 double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Bonn-Miller et al.).

While "CBN" is everywhere in the hemp industry, the vast majority is produced through chemical conversion of CBD with no clinical research behind the specific ingredient. TruCBN is different: naturally derived, certified manufacturing, and tested in human clinical trials.

What does the clinical research on TruCBN show?

The most directly relevant trial is the 2024 Pharmaceuticals study — a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Adults with self-reported sleep disturbance were randomized to TruCBN at 25mg, 50mg, or 100mg nightly, 4mg melatonin, or placebo for four weeks. All three TruCBN doses and the melatonin arm significantly improved PROMIS Sleep Disturbance scores compared to placebo. There was no statistically significant difference in the size of improvement between TruCBN and melatonin.

A separate 2023 study by Bonn-Miller et al. found 20mg CBN (with or without CBD) reduced nighttime awakenings vs placebo over 7 nights.

These trials suggest CBN may be more effective for sleep maintenance (staying asleep, fewer awakenings) than for sleep onset (falling asleep faster).

How does CBN compare to melatonin?

In the 2024 Pharmaceuticals trial, TruCBN at 25-100mg nightly and 4mg melatonin both significantly improved sleep disturbance scores vs placebo, with similar effect sizes. Key differences between the two:

• CBN is non-hormonal; melatonin is a hormone
• CBN is associated with sleep maintenance (reducing awakenings); melatonin is more about circadian timing (helping you fall asleep)
• Both showed similar safety profiles in clinical trials

Many users choose CBN as a non-hormonal alternative to melatonin, particularly those concerned about taking a hormone every night.

Will SLEEP make me feel high?

No. SLEEP is non-intoxicating and tested to non-detect (<LOQ) levels of Delta-9 THC across every batch. CBN is the only active cannabinoid, and CBN does not produce psychoactive effects at any of the doses tested in clinical research (up to 300mg in single-dose protocols).

Is SLEEP USDA Certified Organic?

No. While most Mellow Moose tinctures are USDA Certified Organic, SLEEP is an exception — CBN isolate is not currently approved as an input for USDA organic processing. SLEEP still uses USDA Organic MCT oil as its carrier, and every batch is third-party tested for potency, safety, and compliance.

How long does it take to feel effects?

Many people notice effects within 30–90 minutes when taken sublingually (under the tongue). Timing can vary based on individual factors like metabolism, body weight, and whether the tincture was taken with food. The clinical trials on TruCBN evaluated sleep effects over multi-night dosing rather than single-dose acute effects.

Can I take SLEEP every night?

Yes. SLEEP is designed for regular evening use. The clinical research on TruCBN evaluated 4 weeks of nightly use, with safety and tolerability profiles comparable to placebo and melatonin.

How is SLEEP different from CALM?

SLEEP contains CBN only and is oriented toward nighttime use, while CALM contains CBD only and is oriented toward general relaxation. Many customers use both — CALM during the day or evening, SLEEP closer to bedtime — or combine them for a layered nighttime profile.

How is SLEEP different from full-spectrum tinctures?

Full-spectrum tinctures contain a mix of cannabinoids (including small amounts of THC) along with terpenes and other plant compounds. SLEEP contains CBN only — a single, purified, clinically-studied cannabinoid in a controlled, non-detect (<LOQ) Delta-9 THC formulation.
